Epistle III is disbound, I & II are stitched into old blue-grey wrappers now disintegrating & defective. Foxon P822, P833 & P840.

Gallup A24a. Original red wrappers printed in black, printed price 10 Fr. upper right corner. Untrimmed edges and margins somewhat darkened. The binding is frail and the first few pages slightly loosened. Slight bruising and rubbing to wrappers but very good considering. The title page has been extravagantly inscribed in black ink by the author, the inscription running to all four margins; it reads ‘To certify that E Swainson having bought same refused 10 fr. reimbursement. The authors increased esteem EPound 1924’.

Gallup A61b. Original cloth in price-clipped dustjacket. Endpapers and top edge slightly foxed but internally fine. Dustjacket chipped at edges and darkened at spine. Dustjacket flaps glued to pastedowns. Also glued to rear pastedown is an envelope postmarked Washington DC 1953 addressed in Pound’s hand to Professor J.Mavrogordato of Exeter College Oxford. It contains an approx. 100-word typed letter without greeting or signature, hand-corrected in two places, from Pound to Mavrogordato; Pound is responding to Mavrogordato’s translation of C.P.Cavafy’s poems -- he says ‘I don’t make out (and ignorant of modern greek am unlikely to make out) whether the actual use of language is due to C. or to J.M.’ etc. Mavrogordato’s bookplate on front pastedown and his note of purchase on front endpaper, Oxford September 16 1953.
